Lavinia & José

Hi, we are Lavinia and José, and it is so nice to meet you! We are incredibly grateful that you’re taking a moment to get to know us by reading our story. We know you’re facing a very hard and personal decision, and we want to acknowledge the strength and love behind the choices you’re making for your baby. We can’t pretend to fully understand what you’re going through, but we deeply respect the courage it takes to make decisions like this. In our own lives, we’ve also had to make difficult choices, and while different from yours, these have taught us how much love and strength these moments require. We see that same care in the decision you’re considering, and we truly appreciate it. If you choose us, know that your child will be surrounded by love, stability, and protection, and we’ll make sure they have every chance to grow, learn, and feel loved and supported not only by us, but by our large extended family..

We are here to answer any questions you have for us and hope we can get the chance to know you too.

With love and gratitude,

Lavinia & José
John & Andrew Adoption Story

Our Adoption Story & Promise To You

We met more than ten years ago while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and we have been in each other’s lives ever since. Our jobs have taken us to different countries, sometimes together and sometimes apart, but through it all we have stayed close, supported each other, and have known that we wanted to build a family. Becoming parents has been a hope we have carried for a long time. We tried to grow our family in different ways, including several IVF cycles, but it did not happen for us. We know there are many beautiful ways to create a family, and adoption feels like the right path for us. For both of us, family has never been only about biology. Lavinia’s work in child protection has brought her close to children who needed safety, stability, and love, helping her see adoption as a meaningful and loving way to welcome a child into a family. José’s maternal grandmother was raised by another family, although it was not a formal adoption. José and his family have always considered the people who raised her as family, with the same sense of connection, belonging, and love as their biological relatives. That experience has also shaped how we think about family and made adoption feel like a natural way to grow ours.

We are excited about this process—and, yes, also nervous—but we are ready to welcome your child into our lives and our family. Our friends in New York and our families in Italy, France, and El Salvador are already excited to meet your little one. We have two nieces and many cousins with young children on Lavinia’s side, while on José’s side, we have a three-year-old nephew, so there will be plenty of cousins to play with.

If you choose us, we promise to raise your child with love, stability, and respect. We will honor who they are, where they come from, and the choice you made for them. We will make sure they grow up knowing their story, their identity, and the strength behind your decision. We look forward to sharing our cultures, languages, and love of exploring the world with them. We imagine family gatherings, cooking together, discovering new places, playing games, going to the park, hiking, having ice cream, and enjoying sports like skiing, tennis, and swimming—all the simple, joyful moments that make a childhood full and happy. Most of all, we promise to give your child a life filled with care, protection, and affection, and to always honor you as part of their story.

If you are willing to share, we would also love to hear what your hopes are for your child and what is most important to you in making an adoption plan. We understand if this feels like too much of an ask, but please know we would be honored to travel this path together.

About Us

Because of our international careers, we spent many years living and working in different countries. Even with this kind of physical distance, the care, love, and respect we have for each other always brought us back together. We found ways to meet halfway, visit each other’s families, and stay connected. When we were finally both able to move to New York, we began building the everyday life together that we had missed for so long.

We love the simple things: cooking (we are usually down for most any kind of pasta dish), walking by the waterfront, seeing friends, trying new restaurants, visiting museums, or relaxing at home with a book or a good TV series (Modern Family is our favorite show). We also love traveling, whether to visit our families or discover somewhere new together. What has always kept us strong is how much we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Whether we are traveling, hosting friends, spending time with family, or simply having a quiet evening at home, we feel grateful for the life we have built together and excited to share it with your child.

About Lavinia

I was born in Italy and grew up in a small town. My childhood was basically family, friends, food, school, and a lot of time with my sisters, cousins, and the people around us. We were always together: beach trips, amusement parks, youth groups, swimming lessons, movies, shopping, and big holiday gatherings. I spent a lot of time with my grandma and even my great-grandpa before he passed, since we all lived in the same building. My parents taught me kindness, generosity, respect, and helping people who need it, mostly just by how they lived.

I’ve always loved languages, history, art, and traveling, so during high school I studied for one year abroad in California, and then went on to study in the UK, and France. Eventually I ended up working in child protection and humanitarian services. I spent years in Uganda, Congo, Mali, and Ivory Coast, and now I’m settled in New York.

I’m very close to my family: my parents have been married for 53 years, my sisters are basically my best friends, and I talk to them all the time. And I really love spending time with children. I adore my nieces and we do everything together when I’m in Italy, and when they come to New York. We speak on the phone constantly, even just for quick updates or silly things. They bring so much joy into my life.

As a parent, I want to encourage your child to explore, to be curious, to be kind and respectful, to stay close to friends and family, and to grow up with a deep respect for others. I promise to help them explore who they are and will always be there to support them, no matter what.

Lavinia through José’s eyes

Lavinia has been in my life for 12 years now and has become my best friend and partner ever since. We met during very hard conditions while working in the heart of Africa. As she likes to say, I was probably rolling my eyes at her unintentionally in our office compound, but she soon made her way into my life, and my group of friends, and we became close and got to know each other more. Now, she probably knows me better than anyone else, inside and out.

Lavinia is a very kind and genuinely good person, always putting other people’s needs ahead of hers. She is very sweet, extremely reliable, and a lovely human being. Sometimes she is a little too naïve, which is too cute. She likes to pack light, I don’t, so we have learned to compromise, or maybe I have. She likes to pack light; I don’t, so we’ve learned to compromise – or maybe I have  She is well educated and knows a lot; she always comes up with “fun facts” about random things.

She is extremely hard-working, polite, and always shows a great deal of patience with me. I’m sure she will do the same with your child. I like the way she relates to her family, how she cultivates strong relationships with her nieces, caring for them and always thinking about their needs and projects. She spends quality time with her family as much as possible, and they go on holidays together during the summers.

Something that means so much to me is the very strong relationship she has built with my mom. She is also extremely supportive of me and my dreams. She’s a good listener, always providing very good advice. I often joke with her when I say that I need her wisdom to resolve a challenge in my life, but it’s honestly good to have her opinion guiding me in uncertain times.

I value that we share the same vision of the world and society at large; and I know I can always count on her. She will absolutely be the very best mom there is!

About José

I was born and raised in El Salvador, a small country in Central America. I have wonderful memories of growing up surrounded by sunshine, volcanoes, and beautiful beaches. My maternal grandfather had a beach house that he passed on to my mother, and many of my happiest childhood memories are of family vacations and weekends spent there together. When I was nine years old, my parents separated. From then on, my younger sister and I were raised mainly by our mother. She worked incredibly hard to provide us with everything we needed and to give us better opportunities. Her family was also a big part of my childhood.

I was fortunate to attend a good school where I began learning French when I was a young boy. I loved being active and curious about the world. I was a member of my school’s swimming team and spent many years in a co-ed Scout group. I went camping across El Salvador and even abroad, learning to be independent, respectful, and loving a sense of adventure. At 18, I moved to France to attend university, where I studied law and international relations. I had always dreamed of working for the United Nations because I wanted a career with a purpose. My path has taken me to many countries. After all, it was in Congo that I met Lavinia, the love of my life.

Although I have lived in different parts of the world, I have always remained very close to my family. I regularly make time to visit my mother, spend holidays with her, and stay connected with my loved ones. I also have a three-year-old nephew, who lives in France. Modern technology helps us remain a part of each other’s lives through Facetime calls.

Living and working in different countries has taught me to be open-minded, compassionate, and appreciative of the diversity that makes our world so special. It has also given me lifelong friendships and countless memories. If I am fortunate enough to become a parent, I hope to share these values and experiences with your baby.

José through Lavinia’s eyes

When I first met José, we were in the same group of friends in Congo. Even though we didn’t become close right away, I noticed him immediately because he has this warm, funny, easygoing energy that makes people feel comfortable. He’s quick, charismatic, sweet, and just genuinely enjoyable to be around. My family felt the same way; my close family and even my uncles and cousins always ask about him when we talk, and they love to bring up funny or sweet moments they have shared with him.

As I got to know him better, I started seeing all the other parts of who he is. He’s loving, caring, smart, respectful, and honestly one of the most reliable people I’ve ever met. His kindness really shows in how he talks about the people he loves — his mom, his late grandparents, his nephew in France, and also our dog. He’s also amazing at keeping friendships alive, whether it’s friends who live far away and he hasn’t seen in years, or friends here in New York. He checks in, follows up, and keeps people close.

I feel supported by José every day, even when I’m asking him again to help me with something tech related;) And because he loves food and loves to eat, I always get the best inspiration from him: new recipes, new things to cook, new places to try. He brings warmth, humor, and steadiness into my life, and he’s someone I know I can count on, always.

Our Home

We live in Brooklyn in a cozy two-bedroom apartment with beautiful views of the city and the East River. Our home is filled with light and has become a place we truly love. Our building has outdoor terraces where we enjoy grilling, as well as an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, and a children’s playroom. There are many young families in the building and even a daycare, making it a particularly welcoming place for children.

One of our bedrooms is already set aside for your baby, and we are excited to make it warm and welcoming. Our neighborhood is lively, safe, and family-friendly. We are close to the waterfront, parks, playgrounds, restaurants, and cultural activities. At home, we enjoy cooking together, swimming, playing tennis, reading, watching movies, and having friends over.

We also look forward to sharing our families’ homes with your child. In Italy, there are big family meals and cousins gathered together, while in El Salvador, we hope to spend sunny holidays at the beach with José’s family. We hope your child will grow up feeling at home in many places and surrounded by love, culture, laughter, and family.

Family & Loved Ones

Family is very important to both of us. Lavinia grew up in a big, lively Italian family. She has two older sisters, two nieces, and ten cousins, many of whom now have children of their own. When her family gets together, it’s not unusual to have thirty people around the table. All of them live close to each other, so family gatherings were a regular part of her childhood. Before her grandmother passed away, the whole extended family would gather for lunch every Sunday, and those memories shaped how much family means to her. Lavinia is very close to her parents and talks to them every single day. Because of the time difference, she sometimes calls right when her dad is taking a nap, but he always forgives her because she’s far away. She also talks often with her sisters and nieces. One of her sisters and her nieces visited New York last summer, and her youngest niece loved it so much that she came back again this year on her own.

José’s family is just as loving and supportive. He also has a big family, many cousins, one sister and a three-year-old nephew. José is very close to his mom, calling each other daily, with less time difference than with Italy. They have taken several trips together on holidays. His mom visits New York often, she knows the city really well at this point.

Both our families are incredibly excited about adoption and can’t wait to meet your baby and be part of their life. We are also fortunate to have a wonderful community of friends in New York. Some are friends we met while living abroad, and others have become close friends since we moved here. Many of them have children, and we spend time together sharing meals, visiting museums, going to concerts, traveling, and simply enjoying weekends together.

Holiday & Traditions

We love celebrating holidays and bringing together traditions from Italy, El Salvador, and the United States. Christmas is especially important to us. We love decorating the tree, cooking big meals, and spending time with family and friends. We also enjoy Thanksgiving, Fourth of July celebrations, birthdays, and creating special occasions to bring people together. Because we have lived in different countries, we have collected traditions and memories from many places. We look forward to sharing our favorite traditions with your child while also creating new ones together as a family of three—holidays filled with warmth, fun, good food, and the people who love us.

Travel

Travel has always been an important part of our lives. Our studies and careers have taken us around the world and introduced us to different cultures, languages, and ways of life. When we are not visiting family in Italy, El Salvador, or France, we love taking trips together and discovering new places.

We have traveled together and with our families to many countries including Argentina, Mexico, Morocco, Tunisia, and Peru. For us, travel is not simply about seeing new places; it is about being curious, learning from other people, and creating memories together.

We hope to share that same sense of curiosity and adventure with your child and introduce them to the people, places, cultures, and countries that have shaped who we are.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about us and the people we love. We understand that reading our story and imagining a future for your child is not simple, and we want you to know how deeply we respect the strength, care, and love behind your decision. Your willingness to consider adoption speaks to the kind of person you are. If you choose us, we will honor your courage and your story every step of the way. We will raise your child with love, stability, and respect, and make sure they grow up knowing how much care went into the choices you made for them.

We hope you feel  a sense of who we are, our families, our home, and our hopes– we are grateful for the chance to share our world with you. Thank you again for considering us, it means more than we can say.

With love and gratitude,

Lavinia & José
