Our Adoption Story & Promise to You
Adoption is something that we have always considered, even before we met. Samir’s mom was adopted, and it has always been such a positive and meaningful part of his family. So adoption has always felt like a natural choice as a way to build our family. For us, adoption is a privilege – it means we get the chance to nurture your child as they grow, and to give them unconditional love and stability, while also fulfilling our own dream of becoming parents. We believe that family is built on love, and adoption is a path we’ve been excited and grateful to take.
If you choose us, your child will be wrapped in love, laughter, and the kind of stability that makes a home feel safe. They’ll be appreciated for exactly who they are and supported as they grow into whoever they want to become. Our days will be filled with simple joys, family dinners around the table, bedtime stories and snuggles, birthdays and celebrations with loved ones, summer afternoons riding bikes, swimming, picking flowers, and playing outside, and warm evenings chasing fireflies under the stars. Our home will always be alive with music, laughter, and the kind of moments that make childhood magical.
We promise to raise your child with kindness, curiosity, openness, and compassion. They’ll have the freedom to explore their interests, the security of a family and community that adores them, and the joy of being raised knowing both the city while also having the space and freedom of the countryside to call home.
As part of this journey, we would love to know what is important to you. We promise to always honor you in your child’s life and will never take for granted your role in bringing the greatest gift into our world.
About Us
We met in 2016 at a friend’s house in Brooklyn. In the early days of our relationship, we loved exploring the city together and discovered some of our favorite spots, including the best underground Japanese restaurant and a tiny Italian place with the best mushroom pasta dish. We spent summers having picnics, going to outdoor movies, enjoying live music, and at BBQs with family and friends. On weekends, we’d escape to the Catskills for hikes, antique shopping, and trying new restaurants. These became the trips that planted the seed for a home in the country.
In 2018, we moved in together, and two years later, we found land upstate. In 2020, we married there with a judge, our dogs, and Alex’s parents, followed by the best wood-fired pizza for dinner. The next summer (and after Covid restrictions were lifted), we celebrated with family and friends on our land with lots of food, music, and dancing.
Though we are different in many ways, we share the same values of kindness and compassion. We also laugh a lot and don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we push each other to become the best version of ourselves. More than anything, we are best friends.
These days, our work has shifted toward giving back. Samir left the tech world to earn his master’s in education, and now teaches at a Montessori high school and tutors neurodivergent kids. Alex started in fashion, moved into tech, and then followed her passion to become a certified health and wellness coach. Together, we are building programs that blend our skills, like summer enrichment programs for kids. Working together in this way has been one of the most meaningful parts of our relationship, because it reflects not just what we do, but who we are.
During the week, Alex works from home while Samir is teaching at school. At night, we cook dinner (like roasted veggies, chili, pasta, ramen, or burritos, and sometimes bake a little treat!), talk about our day, watch a show – Severance, Wednesday, and White Lotus were on rotation recently. And we usually read before bed. Samir loves fantasy and sci-fi, while Alex likes fiction. We both loved The Overstory.
Weekends are slower, and start at the farmers market, followed by a long walk with our dog, Bianca, stopping for a coffee and a pastry, and spending time in the garden or working on a project – we plan to start a little flower farm in the country soon. Our lives balance the energy and culture of the city with the quiet and space of the country. It is the best of both worlds, and we are so excited to share it with your child – the places we love, the communities we are part of, and the small and big moments that make life meaningful.
About Alex
Through Samir’s Eyes
Alex is the best person I know and makes me proud every single day. She has this way of always pushing herself, and she inspires me to do the same. She supports me in everything I do and has always encouraged me to be a better person. And the truth is, I am a better person with her in my life. She is the most loving, nurturing, and caring person I have ever met. She cares for every living being with unshakable resolve. I have seen her stay up all night watching over a sick animal, making sure they were comfortable, not resting herself until she knew they were okay. And she tells our dog, Bianca, that she loves her at least a thousand times a day.
Alex is also incredibly creative and passionate. She has a background in fashion and design, and brings that same sense of style, detail, and imagination into everything she does, whether it’s building our home, planning the garden, or new ideas for our future. She even took the lead overseeing the complete gut renovation of her parents’ 1890s home. She poured herself into making sure it was not only beautiful, but also safe and sustainable. Alex brings this attention to detail into every project she takes on, always striving to make things the best she can for other people.
She is devoted to her friends and family, too. Whether it’s caring for her dad and talking to his doctors or being there for her friends going through a hard time, she listens without judgment. She is always there, always helpful, always thinking of others. Sometimes Alex can be more reserved, focused on the day-to-day. Other times, I’ll come home to Alex singing to anything from Wu Tang to Pearl Jam, Gregory Alan Isakov, or listening to jazz. Or she could be dancing around the room to Bad Bunny (I think for our dog’s entertainment as much as her own ;). Those are the moments that show her playful, silly side, and they are just as much a part of her as the nurturing and determined side. She has this rare combination of creativity and determination that makes anything feel possible.
Beyond her talents, what I love most is her heart. Alex has so much compassion for people, animals, and the world around her. She wants to make things better not just for herself, but for others. She is kind, generous, and thoughtful in ways big and small, and I know that is exactly the kind of mother she will be.
About Samir
Through Alex’s Eyes
Samir is a true Renaissance man. He is smart, curious, and very creative. He paints, plays guitar, sings, and writes. He has great (and eclectic!) taste in music – anything from 90s grunge rock, east coast hip hop, to artists like Bon Iver, Big Thief, and Chopin. He is also really athletic. He grew up playing soccer and basketball and can easily pick up any sport. His background is in engineering, too, so he can build or fix pretty much anything. And if he doesn’t know how, he figures it out! He is completely fearless when it comes to trying new things or challenging himself.
What I love most about Samir, though, is his heart. He is compassionate, warm, sensitive, and one of the most generous people I have ever met. He always goes out of his way to help others, and I’ve seen him do it countless times. When I hear him tutoring, I am always struck by how it’s never just about teaching the subject – it’s about connecting with the kids. He cares so much that it comes naturally to him – learning what they are interested in, meeting them where they are, and building trust.
Samir also pushes me to grow. He encourages me to take leaps when I’m nervous to try something out of my comfort zone, like becoming a health coach or getting back into painting. Because of him, I’ve let go of so much self-doubt. Being with Samir has shown me what a true partner can be: inspiring, supportive, my rock, creative, and fun all rolled into one.
He is always singing, making up songs (sometimes in broken Spanish about our dog’s dinner, haha). Kids absolutely love him. When we babysat for his friend’s three kids, within minutes, he was building forts on the floor, and later he sat them all down on our rug, called it a magic carpet, and pulled them all across the floor. They loved it! Samir has every quality that will make him the most amazing father to your baby. I know he is ready for this next chapter.
Where We Live
We split our time between our apartment in downtown Manhattan and our home in the quiet Catskills countryside. We feel lucky to have the best of both worlds.
Alex actually grew up in our NYC apartment! This great apartment has been passed down in her family to her. Samir jokes that when he found out she lived in a rent-stabilized apartment in Manhattan, that sealed the deal. We have a large two-bedroom, two-bath home that is part of a quiet development with lawns and squirrels, playgrounds, basketball and pickleball courts, and plenty of kids running around. It’s the kind of place where kids can safely ride bikes or skateboards (just like Alex did!). In the winter, the playground turns into an ice skating rink for winter magic. We are close to some of the best schools and, of course, amazing restaurants. We love going to Central Park and exploring museums, like the Natural History Museum (magical at any age, but especially for kids). Alex grew up going to them and can’t wait to share that same experience with your child, spending afternoons watching them discover what inspires them most.
Our apartment is warm and creative. We have a lot of plants, books, and artwork, a lot of it made by Samir or artist friends. Our favorite room is the living room, with big windows overlooking the river. It’s where we curl up to read, cuddle with Bianca, and watch movies. Alex gravitates toward spy thrillers and comedies, while Samir loves Alex Garland films, zombie movies, or space adventures, but we usually end up watching a little of everything.
Life in the country is special. We are only five minutes from a small town with great restaurants and shops. Mostly though, we love to escape the busy city and really slow down to appreciate nature. Our house has heated floors, a cedar deck, and a stone patio where we sip coffee or watch spectacular sunsets. Inside, it’s very cozy, with huge windows looking out onto the land to watch the deer graze, a comfy couch, and antiques we’ve restored. On our four acres, there is plenty of room to grow. Samir turned an old shed into an art studio, and we built a second tiny cabin with our bare hands. It’s the perfect little guesthouse for friends and family, and one day, it will be the ultimate playhouse for your child. Samir also added a fire pit and an outdoor shower that overlooks a big meadow. When friends visit, we play lawn games like bocce ball and enjoy outdoor dinners. We also started a garden and orchard. This year, we grew tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, beans, beets, jalapeños, blueberries, and an explosion of blackberries. As we plan for our flower farm, we filled the fields with wildflowers – zinnias, sunflowers, Russian sage, and marigolds.
We are just five minutes from a fantastic swimming river where we take regular trips in the summer. Our wonderful community here has amazing free youth programs, tons of activities for kids, and town events like the tractor parade, local festivals, horseback riding, and 4H. We have become friends with many of the local shop owners and farmers nearby.
It feels so idyllic in the country, and we imagine your child here running through the field with our dog by their side, picking berries, gathering flowers, creating art, learning to ride horses, and playing sports.
Bianca
Animals are an important part of our lives. When we met, Alex had a senior rescue dog who was full of love and personality. He taught us so much about compassion, care, being present in the moment, and the bond you form when you care for an animal. Soon after Samir moved in, we rescued Bianca. She is pure happiness – always close by, loves pulling the stuffing out of toys, and never turns down a cuddle. Whether curled up on the couch or helping in the garden, she always wants to be part of the action.
We have also rescued and fostered other dogs and animals over the years, giving them love and stability until they found their forever homes. It was never easy to say goodbye, but it was always rewarding. It’s our dream to one day expand our little farm in the country to help more animals – dogs, cats, chickens, goats, maybe even horses or donkeys. Having animals around isn’t just about the joy they bring – it’s about teaching compassion, responsibility, and the value of caring for another life.
We can already picture your child growing up in that world, running through the fields with Bianca, helping to feed the animals, and learning to treat all creatures with kindness.
Travel
Appreciating different cultures has always been part of our lives. A few years ago, we went to Jordan with Samir’s family to meet his extended relatives. We were welcomed with so much warmth, love, and unforgettable falafel! The next year, we traveled to Colombia with Alex’s family. From the moment we arrived, her relatives whisked us to a salsa club where we danced all night. We’ve also traveled around the US, like hiking in Santa Fe, and plan to do more road trips here. Before we met, Alex spent five years living in Europe while doing her master’s degree, and Samir has traveled to Thailand, Europe, and Central America. Every trip has deepened our bond with each other and the world, and we can’t wait to share these experiences with your child one day.
Our Loved Ones
Family has always been at the center of our lives. We both grew up in tight-knit families, where we would sit down at the table every night for dinner and talk about the day. It’s something we both loved growing up and something we plan to continue with our own family.
Alex’s family lives nearby, so we see them often, and she talks with her parents every day. Samir even began tutoring because of Alex’s mom, who works in education. Samir’s family is in Minnesota, but we visit at least twice a year and talk to them often. He has three younger siblings – the youngest is actually expecting her first baby soon! His parents have been married for nearly forty years, and his siblings are all kind, fun, and down-to-earth.
We both come from multicultural families. Samir’s dad is Palestinian, and Alex’s mom is Colombian, so we both grew up surrounded by a second language, as well as the tradition, food, and music of another culture. It is a part of who we are, and we look forward to weaving those cultures together with your child’s heritage as well.
Our families are overjoyed about us building our family through adoption. With no grandbabies yet on either side, this little one will be showered with so much love and attention. The same goes for our friends. Many have children of their own and can’t wait to welcome a new little one into the mix, giving them an instant extended family.
Holidays & Traditions
Since we both grew up in multicultural families, holidays have always been filled with food, fun, and traditions. Christmas is usually spent in snowy Minnesota with Samir’s family. Dinner is a Scandinavian-style buffet with lingonberries, meatballs, cabbage, and potatoes, and there is always music. Samir and his siblings play piano or guitar while everyone sings along. The next morning, his dad makes a huge Middle Eastern breakfast with falafel, pita, and hummus. Cats and dogs wander in and out, chickens roam the yard, and the house feels cozy, lively, and full of love.
Thanksgiving is usually with Alex’s family in New York. We host in our apartment and do all the cooking these days, with her family joining. Last year, we had a karaoke machine, and it was so much fun! Birthdays are celebrated with friends and family, and always with whichever homemade cake the birthday person requests.
For us, holidays are about being with the people we love, sharing meals, and making memories. We are so excited to build on these traditions and create new ones once we become parents.
Thank you for spending time with our story. We know how much care and courage this decision takes, and we have a deep respect for you and all the decisions you are navigating. If you choose us, your child will be welcomed into a home that is steady, warm, and full of love. They will be treasured for exactly who they are and encouraged to do what lights them up. We promise a life rooted in kindness, curiosity, and connection.
We believe in honesty, openness, and connection. If an open adoption feels right to you, we are ready to honor that. We will speak about you with gratitude and respect, and make sure your child knows how loved they have always been. Your story will always be part of theirs.
No matter what you decide, thank you for taking the time to get to know us and for considering us to be part of your child’s story
With so much love,
Alex & Samir
