Can I Choose Adoption and Still See My Baby?

Yes. In many cases, you absolutely can.

This is one of the most common questions birth mothers ask, and one of the most important. The fear of never seeing your baby again stops a lot of women from even considering adoption. But the reality of modern adoption looks very different from what most people imagine.

If you are pregnant and wondering whether choosing adoption means losing your child forever, keep reading. This post will walk you through everything you need to know about staying connected with your baby after adoption.

the emotional journey of placing a child for adoption

The Short Answer

Choosing adoption does not have to mean saying goodbye forever. Through open adoption, many birth mothers maintain a real, ongoing relationship with their child, one that can include visits, phone calls, texts, photos, video calls, and more.

You get to decide how much contact you want. That decision is yours.

What Is Open Adoption?

Open adoption is an adoption arrangement where the birth mother and the adoptive family agree to maintain some level of ongoing contact after placement. It is the most common type of domestic infant adoption in the United States today. And this is for good reason, research consistently shows that open adoption benefits birth mothers, adoptive families, and most importantly, children.

In an open adoption, contact can look many different ways depending on what you and the adoptive family agree to. There is no single formula. It is built around what works for everyone involved, with your needs and wishes at the center.

What Does Contact Actually Look Like?

Every open adoption is different, but common forms of contact include:

Photos and updates: Many adoptive families send regular photos and updates, monthly, quarterly, and/or on special occasions like birthdays and holidays. This allows you to watch your child grow even if you are not physically present.

Texts and phone calls: Some birth mothers stay in regular contact with the adoptive family through texts, phone calls, or messaging apps. The frequency is something you agree on together.

Video calls: Video calls have become a meaningful way for birth mothers to see their child’s face, hear their voice, and feel connected from wherever they are.

In-person visits: Many open adoptions include in-person visits at a park, a restaurant, or another comfortable location. These visits can be scheduled regularly or on special occasions, depending on what you and the adoptive family decide together.

The level of contact is entirely up to you and the family you choose. At Hudson Hearts, we sit down with you and the adoptive family to create a contact plan that feels right for everyone, including you.

What Is Semi-Open Adoption?

In a semi-open adoption, contact between you and the adoptive family is maintained through a third party, typically your adoption agency. You may receive photos and updates without having direct contact with the adoptive family.

This option works well for birth mothers who want some connection and reassurance that their baby is safe and thriving, but prefer not to have direct communication with the adoptive family.

What Is Closed Adoption?

In a closed adoption, there is no contact between the birth mother and the adoptive family after placement. Identifying information is not shared, and there is no ongoing communication.

Closed adoption is much less common today than it once was. But it remains an option, and if it is the right choice for your circumstances, we will support you in that decision.

Can I Change the Level of Contact Over Time?

Yes. Many open adoptions evolve naturally over time. Some birth mothers start with letters and photos and gradually build toward visits as trust and comfort grow. Others may need more space in the early months after placement and reconnect more actively later.

Life changes too. Your relationship may look different at different stages of your child’s life and yours. A good adoption plan is one that has room to grow and change.

At Hudson Hearts, we help you and the adoptive family build a contact agreement that is thoughtful and flexible, one that prioritizes your child’s wellbeing and yours.

Will the Adoptive Family Honor the Contact Agreement?

This is a real concern, and we understand why you might worry about it. The most important thing you can do is choose an adoptive family you trust, one whose values, communication style, and openness feel right to you.

At Hudson Hearts, every family in our program has gone through a thorough screening process and a state-approved Homestudy. We get to know them well before they are ever matched with a birth mother. We also facilitate and support the contract agreement process to make sure both parties have clear expectations from the beginning.

And we do not disappear after placement. We continue to support birth mothers long after their baby is placed, which means if you ever have concerns about your contact agreement, we are still here for you.

What If I'm Not Sure How Much Contact I Want?

That is completely normal. Many birth mothers have no idea how much contact they want before placement, and that is okay. You do not have to have it all figured out before you reach out to us.

Some women find that they want more contact than they expected. Others find they need more space than they thought. Both are valid. The contact plan you create is a starting point, not a final answer.

What matters most is that you go into your adoption plan with a clear understanding of your options, a family you feel good about, and a team behind you who will support you every step of the way.

Katy's Story

Katy placed her twin boys through Hudson Hearts in 2014. She had an open adoption and has maintained a beautiful ongoing relationship with her sons and the family who adopted them, through calls, texts, video calls, and in-person visits.

After experiencing firsthand the need for post-placement support, Katy went on to found Giving More Through Adoption, a support group for birth parents. She works to make sure no birth parent ever feels alone in their decision or their healing.

Her life is proof that choosing adoption and staying connected to your child are not opposites. For Katy, open adoption allowed her to watch her boys grow up, see their joy, and find peace in her decision every single day.

“It is Katy’s mission to make sure that no birth parent feels alone in their decision and healing, no matter how long ago they placed.”

Common Questions About Contact After Adoption

Can I see my baby in the hospital before placement? Yes. You can spend as much time with your baby in the hospital as you would like. This is your time, and we make sure your wishes are completely respected.

Can I choose the family my baby goes to? Yes. At Hudson Hearts, you choose the family. You can read their profiles, see their photos, ask questions, text them, and meet them in person before making any decisions. We want you to feel 100% confident in your choice.

What if the adoptive family lives far away? Distance does not have to limit your connection. Video calls, photos, and regular updates mean you can stay close even when you are not in the same city. Some contact plans include visits during school breaks or special occasions regardless of distance.

Can my baby know who I am? In an open adoption, yes. All of our adoptive families raise their children with full knowledge of and love for their birth mother. Children in open adoptions often grow up knowing their birth mother as a meaningful and cherished part of their story.

Is contact legally protected? Contact agreements vary by state. Our team will walk you through exactly what your agreement looks like legally, step by step, so you always know where you stand.

You Deserve to Feel at Peace

Choosing adoption is not choosing to abandon your baby. It is choosing to make a plan, a loving, intentional, courageous plan, for your child’s future. And in an open adoption, it does not have to mean losing them.

At Hudson Hearts, we believe you deserve to feel connected, informed, and supported no matter what you decide. If you have questions about open adoption, contact after placement, or anything else, we are here.
