I Can’t Parent Right Now, What Are My Options?
If you are pregnant and feeling like you cannot parent right now, you are not alone. This is one of the most common thoughts women have when facing an unplanned pregnancy, and it is a completely valid one. Feeling unprepared, overwhelmed, or unsure does not make you a bad person. It makes you someone who is thinking carefully about what is best for you and your baby.
The good news is that you have options. Real options. And no one can pressure you into any of them. This guide is here to help you understand what those options are so you can make the decision that is right for you.
What Does "I Can't Parent Right Now" Actually Mean?
For some women, “I can’t parent right now” means they are not financially ready. For others, it means they don’t have a support system, they are too young, they are in an unsafe situation, or they simply know in their heart that this is not the right time. All of these reasons are valid. You do not owe anyone an explanation for how you feel.
What matters most is that you have all the information you need to make a decision you feel at peace with, now and in the future.
Two Options We Are Here to Walk Through With You
1. Parenting
Even if parenting feels impossible right now, it is worth understanding what support is available before ruling it out. There are government assistance programs, nonprofit organizations, and community resources that help single parents, young parents, and parents in financial hardship.
If you choose to parent, resources like WIC, SNAP, Medicaid, and local housing assistance programs may be available to you. Some women who feel they cannot parent find that with the right support in place, it becomes possible.
That said, only you know your situation. If parenting truly is not right for you right now, that is okay too.
2. Adoption
Adoption is one of the most loving and courageous decisions a mother can make. It is not giving up. It is making a thoughtful, intentional plan for your baby’s future when you know you are not in a place to provide what they need right now.
There are several types of adoption to consider:
Open Adoption: In an open adoption, you maintain ongoing contact with the family who adopts your baby. This can include texts, calls, photos, video calls, and even in-person visits. You choose the level of contact that feels right for you. Many birth mothers find that open adoption gives them peace of mind knowing they can watch their child grow and thrive.
Semi-Open Adoption: In a semi-open adoption, contact is maintained through a third party, like your adoption agency. You may receive updates and photos without having direct contact with the adoptive family.
Closed Adoption: In a closed adoption, there is no contact between you and the adoptive family after placement. While this is less common today, it remains an option for women who feel it is the right choice for their circumstances.
What adoption with Hudson Hearts looks like:
- You choose the family for your baby. You can read their profiles, see their photos, ask questions, and meet them before making any decisions.
- You create your own adoption plan. You decide the level of openness, your hospital plan, and what you want your relationship with your baby to look like going forward.
- All services are 100% free to you. We also offer financial assistance for pregnancy-related expenses, including housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, medical care, and maternity clothing.
- You are never alone. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can call or text us any time, day or night.
